Faiths Calling to Prevent Gun Violence on Tuesday April 9th

On Tuesday, April 9th, The Church of the Brethren and over 40 other religious organizations are joining forces again to encourage their congregants to call their Senators and demand action on gun violence. The number to call is 1-888-897-0174.

This event is a follow-up to the original Faiths Calling event on February 4th that generated 10,000 calls to Congress from citizens concerned about gun violence. The success of the first event spurred the Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism to organize another call during a week that important gun violence measures will be debated in the Senate. We hope that by teaming up with them and other religious organizations, the Senate will again hear an overwhelming and faithful voice demanding change. We ask you to take time on Tuesday April 9th and call your Senators and let your voice be heard.

The Church of the Brethren has always mourned the abundance of violence in our world, and has consistently worked for peace and called on its members to be powerful witnesses to this tragedy. Annual Conference statements from 1978, 1987, 1994, and 1999 have called on our citizens and government to address our gun violence epidemic.

Most recently, the Mission and Ministry board adopted a Resolution in Support of the National Council of Churches of Christ, USA: Ending Gun Violence. In this resolution members of the church were implored to "Call upon our local, state, and federal legislators to enact reforms that limit access to assault weapons and handguns, including closing the so-called federal 'gun show loophole,' which allows for the purchase of firearms from private sellers without submitting to a background check, or providing documentation of the purchase."

We know that there are differences in perspective among the members of the Church of the Brethren, and we ask you to express whichever policies that you are comfortable supporting. The different types of legislation that Congress is considering are listed below. When you call your Senators, let them know that you are calling as a member of the Church of the Brethren, and let them know the policies that you support.

  • Require universal background checks for all gun purchases
  • Ban semi-automatic assault weapons and high-capacity magazines
  • Make gun trafficking a federal crime
  • Enhance school and campus safety
  • Improve access to mental health services

We appreciate and thank you for your action and continued support. Don’t forget to call your Senators on Tuesday April 9th at 1-888-897-0174!

We must continue to be faithful and "work with other Christians to find dramatic and effective ways to witness to the peace and reconciliation offered through Jesus Christ." --1994 Annual Conference Statement on Violence in North America
